Freedom of Expression Panel
Join us for a special panel discussion on censorship, intellectual freedom, and the power of literature. The panel includes: Maia Kobabe (Author of the Alex and Stonewall award winning graphic novel, GENDER QUEER: A MEMOIR): E has been self-publishing comics and zines since 2010, and has attended over fifty comic conventions in that time. Eir work is heavily influenced by fairy tales, homesickness, and the search for identity. Noah Grigni (Children's book illustrator for such books as It Feels Good To Be Yourself by Theresa Thorn (2019), The Every Body Book by Rachel Simon (2020), and The Gender Identity Workbook For Kids by Kelly Storck (2018).): Their goal with their art is to celebrate trans joy, empower trans kids, and create space for community healing. Mickey Huff (Director of Project Censored and President of the nonprofit Media Freedom Foundation): Project Censored educates students and the public about the importance of a truly free press for democratic self-government. We expose and oppose news censorship and we promote independent investigative journalism, media literacy, and critical thinking. Through our website, weekly radio program, annual book, and other programs, we provide this service to the United States, Canada, UK, and the world. Panelists will be joined by local teen activists for this discussion. Teens from all over Sonoma County participated in the workshop to create "For the Love of Comics", which is being sold to support Lumacon!
